Easy, Customizable Labels with Silhouette Portrait & GIVEAWAY!

I am a true crafter-wanna-be! I occasionally have a great idea on my own, but typically they come from inspiration I find somewhere. That’s where my husband (a perfect match for me) comes into play; I find an idea (or create one) then he masterminds a plan to make it happen. For example my love for the seashell shadow boxes in the San Diego Airport Women’s Bathroom, yes I made him peek in to see them (don’t tell him I told anyone that)! From that idea, he created this Seashell Window Frame Shadow Box for our home. Pretty amazing huh!? Yea, I must give him credit for making my crazy ideas a reality!

Until now, I am absolutely loving my Silhouette Cameo and all the amazing things I can make with it! I have actually given my husband a break for my random projects for awhile because I can make so many fun things on my own. {maybe that’s why he bought it for me for my birthday…} Anyway, now that the holidays are settled, we are moved into our new home, and life is back in motion, I have had more time to slip away and ‘cut things’! :)

I have shared a few projects like this and this, but I also have so many more fun projects to share in the future! Today I am sharing a very basic project with you and a few tips on how to create your own customizable labels for things around your home. I think my husband and boys thought they might be the next to get labeled when I first got my machine, but they escaped un-vinyled!

Easy, Customizable Labels with a Silhouette Machine (PLUS Giveaway and Discount Code)

Materials:

  • Silhouette Machine (Cameo or Portait)
  • Computer
  • Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition Software
  • Vinyl

Directions:

1. Before creating any even ‘basic’ projects on your Silhouette machine, be sure to read through the complete directions on set up and the basics on using your machine. These are foundational for any project.

2. To create your own labels, you will want to select your vinyl and stick it to your cutting mat. I choose a flat black that ressembles a ‘chalkboard’ look because it would match my kitchen and look great on my (boring) white canisters!

3. To get a good positioning on your cutting mat, roll your vinyl up, secure the top corners in place, then unroll the vinyl onto the rest of the mat.

4. Next, you are going to use your Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition Software to create your own design. I purchased the shape label using the Silhouette online store, which is accessible through your designer software! Then I downloaded it, choose the font style and size I wanted and created my labels. I personally loved that I could even add spacing in between the letters to fill up more space with a short word.

5. You then load your cutting mat, send your design from the computer to your machine and press CUT!

using the sillhouette designer software

6. When the cutting is finished, you will unload your cutting mat, remove the vinyl and cut it to size. You will notice below that the letter -r was removed, and you can slightly see the cut design around it.

7. Using a ‘pick tool’ you will want to remove the letters, apply a piece of transfer tape over the label (follow the directions on the package).

8. Then you will place the transfer tape and shape onto the item you want the label to stick to and rub it firmly with a scraping tool.

9. Beginning in a corner, begin to peel away the transfer tape to leave the label. If they label does not separate, relay the transfer tape back down and rub firmly again over the shape.

 10. You are done! Once you label your first project, the process will seem so much easier and less complicated; I promise! Labeling canisters or something else small around your home is a great way to start and get acquainted with your machine!
