Fighting Hunger- Get Involved!!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Ever since I was young, I have had a desire to help people in need. It's nothing me, I feel like I've been given this feeling. I know many of you out there have the same feelings that I do, that's what makes you great moms and wives. You see needs and you figure out a way to solve that need.

I wanted to take this post to share with you an initiative that I heard about through Walmart, their effor to provide hunger relief across America. Walmart is partnering with Feeding America to donate 53 million meals and $2.5 million.

When I was teaching in California, I had the opportunity to see the impact Feeding America had at the school where I worked. My school was a Title I school that had 98% of the students on free lunch (not reduced lunch, but free lunch). Many of these students were refugees from areas in the middle east. Students whose parents had been teachers, doctors, lawyers, and engineers in their native countries, but now had to work minimum wage jobs trying to provide money for their households (many of which were made up of more than just their immediate families).

Many of these students would eat a free breakfast at school, have lunch, and the go home- only to go to bed without dinner. School was the only provider of meals for some of theses students, it would break my heart to see. It was hard to imagine that these students would get fed over the weekends, but that's where I had the chance to see Feeding America in action.

Each Friday afternoon, I would see Feeding America volunteers handing out grocery bags of food for parents to take home with them. These groceries were meals that would help to nourish the students over the weekend. It was wonderful to see that each weekend!

So why do I share this? I want you to help. Together we can help fight hunger!

  • Walmart has partnered with several different food companies that will be donating meals. By going to Walmart and buying from the following brands (General Mills, Kellogs, Unilever, Kraft Foods, and ConAgra Foods). If you forget, just look for the "Fighting Hunger Together" signs and shop from those foods.

  • You can go to Fighting Hunger Together and turn products into meals under the "Give Meals" section.
  • Visit Walmart's website and check out the Golden Spark promotion. Learn about what you can do in your community to help end hunger. You can also enter the Golden Spark promotion, where Walmart will choose 40 "Golden Sparks" who will have the opportunity to chose a community to receive $50,000 to help fight hunger.
  • Finally, get involved in your community. There are so many different ways that you can get involved in help provide hunger relief in your communities. You can partner with your local food pantry to donate food, volunteer to help sort. Also, you can volunteer at a local soup kitchen or another program that helps feed the hungry. Have your kids join you so that you can pass on to them the value of helping others.

I wanted to share with you one last story about feeding the hungry. I had the opportunity to do my student teaching at an international school in Quito, Ecuador. When walking the streets of Ecuador, I would see so many homeless families with young kids begging for money. I started putting crackers and little snacks in my purse to give them to the kids that would beg for money. The look on their faces was that of gratitude. I know it would only help for a little while, but it was something that I knew I could do.

So what about you? How have you been helping? Share your comments about what you do to help fight hunger!
