Planning a Visit To Your Local Fire Station

We recently had a Fire Truck themed birthday for our 3 year old. He loves to read about fire trucks, search for them while we are driving, and build fire stations with his Legos. As a primary teacher, I had taken my classes to the fire station several times and thought it would be a lot of fun for a birthday party as well. Our local fire fighters were fantastic with the kids (primarily toddlers) who came and coming away we weren’t sure who enjoyed the visit more the little kids or the inquisitive dads! :)

Here are a few tips for planning our own fire station visit whether it be for a birthday party, a mom’s group, or even just your own family:

1. Select two or three dates that work best for you.

2. Call your local fire station about a month ahead and let them know the following:

  • Who you are
  • What you are wanting to visit for (a tour, to see a fire truck, or both)
  • What type of group is wanting to come (ages, number of possible attendees)
  • Ask if they have special programs already in place for visiting
  • Ask them if your preferred date will work for them and set up a time
  • Ask for the name of who you spoke with (for reference later)
  • Ask for the best time/date to call back to remind/confirm closer to visit
3. Let everyone know and collect RSVP’s. Remind your guests that obviously if there is a local fire, everyone will have to be flexible.
4. Call the fire station the day before or day of to confirm. Give them a confirmed number of how many will be attending.

Here are a few tips and some our favorite memories of the tour:

The fire men showing the fire truck storage doors where they keep all their equipment.

Testing out the Firemen’s Exercise Room

 ’Driving’ the Fire Truck! Each child got the chance to get their picture taken in the driver’s seat.

Spraying the fire hose! The fire men were so patient and actually let each child have turn!

Firemen Lockers

The ‘volunteered’ the birthday boy’s mom (ME) to test out all their equipment!

Mommy dressed up in ALL the fire fighter’s gear! {I start sweating just looking at that picture again!}

Junior Fire Fighter Certificates (CLICK HERE for the FREE printable you can personalize for your own party.)

{I made these and brought them with us for the firemen to hand out at the end of our tour.}

We brought along brownies for the firemen as a ‘thank you gift’.

Everyone had a great time and learned a lot about all the hard work our local fire fighters do to keep our community safe! Thank you to all the fire men out there for your bravery, service, and dedication!
