Summer Readathon 2012! FREE Ebooks!

Cheerios and Lattes is excited to announce our partnership with PBSkids’ and Memetales’ Summer Readathon 2012! These great organizations are joining hands with several publishers to combat the “Summer Slide.” Summer is a great time for kids to have fun, but research also states that kids without access to learning opportunities over the summer can lose up to 2 months of learning from the school year! This means that teachers will be spending weeks reteaching lost and forgotten material once school starts again. MeMeTales, along with PBSKids, is working to give all kids, across the world access to books for FREE from June 18th to July 28th. Every week, kids get to “borrow” books via the MeMeTales website and apps. Learn more about Readathon2012 here!

Participating in the Readathon is simple (click here for step by step instructions) and sure does makes that summer slide look a lot less daunting. The program is straightforward: each week your child reads books online or on an iPhone or iPad (an aspect about that allows you and your child to read together anywhere; even on the go) based on a particular theme, which include:

Week 1 – Animal Fun
Week 2 – Friendship
Week 3 – Character Development
Week 4 – Imagination
Week 5 – The Green earth
Week 6 – Global Cultures

Your Child: Not only gets to participate and read FREE wonderful books each week, but at the end of each week, he/she earns a certificate of achievement to display proudly!

You: As a parent, educator or caretaker, you can be as involved as you want to be in the excitement and learning. For example, my sons are 18 months and 3 so I will be creating hands-on reading experiences with them and sharing these activities with you weekly. Adults also have access to a huge set of activities via a newsletter and reputable bloggers (who have partnered with Memetales) to go along with book themes.

FREE E-Books: This is a great opportunity for families to integrate technology into their child’s learning every day. Interactive E-Books are one way that you can enjoy and embrace reading and storytelling. Reading with technology will also prepare your child to use this same technology later in their school experience.

Memetales: Check out Memetales and the great program they have set up for families, educators, and caretakers to download ebooks at home for a minimal cost. I am so excited that Memetales is partnering with the Summer Readathon to offer FREE themed books all Summer. Thank you  Memetales for gifting our children this Summer!

Purpose: The best part about the Readathon is that it not only aims to prevent the “Summer Slide” but the effort also supports an organization called FoodForEducation.org, which assists in getting kids across the world to school. So for every child joining the Readathon, MeMeTales is donating a meal to send a hungry child to school via FoodForEducation.org. How AWESOME is that!?!

Disclaimer: I partnered with Memetales and PBSkids’ to promote and execute this program via publishing activities and ideas around books within the chosen theme. I would have been an active participant outside of this partnership arrangement, from which my family receives books and my blog receives exposure. I feel honored to be working with PBS kids and Memetales, and believe that both organizations/companies have the best intentions in promoting literacy.
