Teaching Your Child How to Spell Their Name

As an E.S.L teacher, I “wrote” my own songs to teach my students just about anything and everything. It was just my luck, that I would always seem to have a drop-in visitor in the middle of my silly songs. My husband would also have a good laugh as I would proudly share my new songs with him in the evenings. I encouraged him to try it with his E.S.L high schoolers but he never seemed to think it would go over the same! ;) Lately, I have been at it again with my oldest son, as I composed our newest “family song” the 6 Letter Name song to help him spell his name!

Here are a few outlines I’ve used to teach my son and other students how to spell their names. Most names have between 3-7 letters so here are a few outlines I’ve used:

3 Letter Names: (to the tune of Happy Birthday) ” _ _ _, spells _(child’s name)_. _ _ _, spells _(child’s name)_. _ _ _, spells _(child’s name)_. _ _ _, spells _(child’s name)_.

4 Letter Names: (to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb) ” _ _ _ _ spells _(child’s name)_, spells _(child’s name)_, spells _(child’s name)_. _ _ _ _ spells _(child’s name)_, I hear it everyday.”

5 Letter Names: (to the tune of Bingo) “There was a boy/girl who had a __(something they love)__, and _(child’s name)__ was his/her name-O. _ _ _ _ _, _ _ _ _ _, _ _ _ _ _, and __(Child’s name)___ was his/her name-O.”

6 Letter Names: (to the tune of Bingo) “There was a boy/girl who had a __(something they love)_, and _(child’s name)_ was his/her name-O. _ _ _-_ _ _, _ _ _- _ _ _, _ _ _- _ _ _, and __(Child’s name)_ was his/her name-O.

7 Letter Names:(to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle) “_ _- _ _-_ _ _, that’s the way we spell _(child’s name). Seven letters in a row, seven letters I now know. _ _- _ _-_ _ _, that’s the way we spell _(child’s name).”

  1. Oh No! My son’s name has 9 etters! My husband keeps telling me that I should have named Nathaniel something shorter because it is going to be so hard for him to learn how to spell it. I guess this is proof! I love the idea of the song. I guess I am going to have try and figure out one for 9 letters. Any suggestions?

  2. That’s awesome! I’ve been doing a variation of this with my kiddies. My daughter’s full name has 9 letters so I knew I had a challenge ahead of me helping her to learn how to spell her name. I made up a tune for each of the kids names and have been singing it to them since they were infants. My daughter’s is an original tune because her name is so long and my son’s is a variation of a Sesame Street song. Both of the kids learned to ‘spell’ their names by 14 months and by 18 months they were ‘spelling’ each other’s names.

    • Wow, a nine letter name would be hard to fit to a tune. Isn’t is great how quickly they learn their name when put to a song they can sign!? :) Thanks for sharing!

  3. Great ideas! My mom made a song for me too!

  4. What a wonderful idea! Thank you so very much for sharing. I’ll have to try this out with my preschoolers, as part of my name “arsenal”.

  5. Great tips! We sing our boys names to the tune of Bingo a lot at our house . Love it!
