Problem:
Socks and I have a love/hate relationship! I LOVE to wear them because my feet always seem to be freezing. However, I HATE hunting for, washing, sorting, and folding them. In both pregnancies I melted over the size of infant socks, but that soon disappeared as my washer began ‘eating them’. I have been losing socks into the depths of the washer/dryer land from the very first weeks on Big Brother’s life… Now, with two boys only 18 months apart I can barely sort their socks without carefully comparing them to one another’s; taking more and more time to finish the laundry. Until…
Solution:
I discovered small mesh laundry lingerie bags! The PERFECT Solution for my ‘Missing Sock’ Dilema! I purchased a mesh bag for each of our boys, labeled them with their name in permanent marker, and hung them next to their laundry basket in their bathroom. Instead of throwing their socks into the laundry I (we are working on the THEY ) put their socks into the bag. When it is time to wash their laundry, I simply zip the bags closed, and them into the washer and then the dryer. When they are finished, I simply unzip the bag and match the socks; no more guess work! Now, my feelings towards socks are improving {a little}.
Materials:
- Mesh laundry lingerie bag
- Permanent Marker
Directions:
1. Purchase and label your mesh laundry lingerie bag (I had to write on the zipper strip).
2. Hang in a convient location.
3. Train your children how to use them.

You are so organized! Love it! Wish your mother, I, had that gene!:-)
Mackenzie, you are so smart, I just wish you had shared this about 12 years ago. All my kids are teenagers and beyond training I fear, lol
Joan- Here’s the deal, give them a bag, tell them to fill it. If they do, you will wash their socks. If they don’t…{let’s just hope they do}. Then wash the bags and pass them back out for THEM to match and fold!
This is great practice for college!
I keep meaning to do this. When our youngest was a baby and toddler I did this for his socks, especially the ittsy bittsy baby socks. I meant to do it for the whole family but never got around to it. I think I’m going to have put mesh bags on my shopping list!
Alli- Try it… I promise you won’t go back!
How full can this bag grow and still give an effective wash? The hubs and I have been disagreeing as to which black socks belong to whom and I would like to end that one! Thanks, in advance!
Well… that depends how clean you want them!
haha Some days I admit, I just don’t care and fill them pretty full {shh, don’t tell}! The best wash happens when they are 3/4 full or less. Just smell them afterwards, you’ll know if it was too full! HAHA
No shame in that! Thanks for the reply. These are going on my list to purchase. ASAP
Now that is very clever!!!! Thanks so much for sharing this tip! Pinning!
I love those mesh bags and use them all the time!
Great idea to label them for each child! I’ve used mesh lingerie bags for years for corralling socks, but I just have one that doubles for sock and bra duty. I’m going to pick up a few more and try a specific bag for each kiddo (and keep the nice one for Mom!). Thanks!
Jessica, I was the same way, I now know that ONE is not enough!
I wish I had seen this when my kids were little. Now that they’re older, I make it work by buying different brands. Hanes are always Will’s, and Fruit of the Looms are always Bobby’s. But I’ll have to try fighting the sock monster with mesh bags! Thanks for the tip!
