Fine Motor Skill Activities- #7 Toothpicks & Spice Jars

I love creating fine motor activities out of everyday items around the house. Here is one I landed upon recently, my little guys have been very into “playing kitchen” and were thrilled when I handed over a few empty spice jars and toothpicks for them to explore. My older son and I continued playing further with them. See below for a few different activities you can do with toothpicks and spice jars.

Materials:

  • Toothpicks
  • Spice Jars (preferably with holes)

Activity Suggestions:

1. Give the two materials to your child for free play and let them discover what they can do with them.

2. Encourage your child to practice counting toothpicks as they place them into the spice jar.

3. Pour the toothpicks out of the table and challenge your child to see how many they can pick up one at a time and place in the spice jar in one minute. Play along with them and challenge yourself as they cheer you on. Finally, work together to see how many you can get in the spice jar together in one minute!
