Cupcakes or cake? Big or small? Dinner and or just dessert? When planning a birthday for my boys I always begin by first selecting a theme about a month prior to their birthday. Then I spend the next month searching for pictures and ideas that I can use and make our own.
Below you will find pictures with a few explanations, hopefully you can glean a few ideas and make them even better! If you have any questions please feel free to write and I will be sure to answer!
The top of the cupcake tower. The “first birthday” cake. The sand was brown sugar, the fish on the side were shaped from Starbursts melted for a few seconds in the microwave. The octopus and crab are colored fondant. The water is blue sparkle gel.
The Birthday Cake/Cupcake Tower. The blue merengue icing with shark fins were chocolate cupcakes. The sandy cupcakes with crab claws or umbrellas were vanilla cupcakes.

These were our guest favors. They were baby food jars filled with colored Goldfish crackers and covered with blue cellophane paper. The tags on the front read: “Thanks for swimming by to celebrate my birthday!”
Gummy fish frozen in ice cubes. During the party, you could find these cold little guys swimming in a large bowl of blue “ocean water (blue juice).”
Our little 1-year-old ready to swim!
